Art is my life. I make drawings and prints that influence people to see the philosophy of everyday life. I draw inspiration most often from nostalgic memories in which I observed the world in an enlightening way, such as bicycling on a path right next to the fluttering wings of a bat, or observing the silhouetted forms of an oak tree; a form that I attempt to duplicate while crosshatching a drawing. I use materials that can be easily manipulated, to create abstractions and textures that appear to be highly detailed, but are actually my individual impressions of how forms appear. In my series of three observational drawings of tree stumps in various stages of decomposition, and one large drawing of a pile of sticks, my main concern was to give the drawing the same feeling that the sticks gave me. I drew abstract forms of different line quality and lightness with various kinds of graphite sticks and pencils to replicate the chaotic points of light and dark that I observed. I also bring photography into my work to add an element of direct observation and discoveries in everyday life from a personal points of view. My goal for working in these methods is to juxtapose reality with the unknown, to make people see the possibilities that life has to offer. Graffiti is one of my biggest influences. I see street art as a reflection of city culture, because it is shaped by the people of a city to show the richness of the community. Corporations dominate the world of outdoor advertising, and graffiti is an art form that I use to counteract the 5000 advertisements that the average American will see in one day. I choose to become an artist because I want to make work that is seen and digested as something that gives truths of life. I also try to get work out into the real world, for people to find and keep, or to just see as they walk to work. I want to influence people to make their life more like a work of art; full of inspiration. |
